Aside from aesthetics, Honor Magic6 Ultimate and Magic6 RSR Porsche Design would be getting another improvement in terms of their camera system. Specifically, the two models are reportedly getting the LOFIC technology in their lenses, which should significantly improve the dynamic range performances of their systems.
Details about the two Magic 6-based smartphones remain limited, although their actual designs were recently revealed through leaks. Nonetheless, in a new report from Xinhua News Agency, it was revealed that both models would be armed with LOFIC-capable lenses.
Honor’s Li Kun, a mobile phone product manager, discussed the technology in the past, saying the name stands for Lateral OverFlow Integration Capacitor. It was the fruit of a collaboration between Honor and OmniVision with the aim of improving the dynamic range in smartphone camera systems.
In general, the idea is to preserve the highlight and shadow details to allow the device to attain an extremely high dynamic range of 15EV. It is believed that the tech could lead to an “800% improved” dynamic range, which can be compared to the work of Sony Alpha a7S III. Of course, this still needs to be tested as the dynamic range level mentioned remains theoretical at the moment. We will soon be able to confirm this once the two smartphones launch.
