Snadragon 695 is a mid-range chipset introduced in October 2021. The new Snapdragon 695 includes significant improvements over the previous generation Snapdragon 690, but has some setbacks. If we talk briefly about devices using the Snapdragon 695 chipset, Honor used this chipset for the first time in the world in the Honor X30 model. Later, they announced devices with Snapdragon 695 chipset in other brands such as Motorola and Vivo. This time, a move came from Xiaomi and the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G with Snapdragon 695 chipset was announced recently. We think we will see more devices with Snapdragon 695 chipset this year. Today we will compare the Snapdragon 695 chipset with the previous generation Snapdragon 690 chipset. What kind of improvements have been made compared to the previous generation, let’s move on to our comparison and talk about everything in detail.
Starting with the Snapdragon 690, this chipset introduced in June 2020 brings a new 5G modem, Cortex-A77 CPUs and Adreno 619L graphics unit over its predecessor Snapdragon 675. It should be noted that this chipset is produced with Samsung’s 8nm (8LPP) production technology. As for the Snapdragon 695, this chipset, introduced in October 2021, is produced with TSMC’s 6nm (N6) manufacturing technology and includes some improvements compared to the Snapdragon 690. Let’s move on to the detailed review of the new Snapdragon 695 which comes with better mmWave supported 5G Modem, Cortex-A78 CPUs and Adreno 619 graphics unit.
CPU Performance
If we examine the CPU features of Snapdragon 690 in detail, it has 2 performance-oriented Cortex-A77 cores that can reach 2.0GHz clock speed and 6 Cortex-A55 cores that can reach power efficiency-oriented 1.7GHz clock speed. If we examine the CPU features of the new Snapdragon 695 chipset in detail, there are 2 performance-oriented Cortex-A78 cores that can reach 2.2GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores that can reach power efficiency-oriented 1.7GHz clock speed. On the CPU side, we see that the Snapdragon 695 has switched from Cortex-A77 cores to Cortex-A78 cores compared to the previous generation Snapdragon 690. To briefly mention the Cortex-A78 is a core designed by ARM’s Austin team to enhance the sustained performance of mobile devices. This core has been designed with a focus on the PPA (Performance, Power, Area) triangle. Cortex-A78 provides 20% performance increase over Cortex-A77 and reduces power consumption. The Cortex-A78 significantly improves power efficiency over Cortex-A77 by simultaneously solving two predictions per cycle that Cortex-A77 struggles to solve. Snapdragon 695 performs much better than Snapdragon 690 thanks to Cortex-A78 cores. Our winner in terms of CPU performance is the Snapdragon 695.
GPU Performance
When we come to the GPU, we see Adreno 619L, which can reach 950MHz clock speed on Snapdragon 690, and Adreno 619, which can reach 825MHz clock speed on Snapdragon 695. When we compare the graphics processing units, the Adreno 619 performs much better than the Andreno 619L. Our winner when it comes to GPU performance is the Snapdragon 695. Finally, let’s examine the image signal processor and modem, and then make a general assessment.
Image Signal Processor
When we come to the image signal processors, Snapdragon 690 comes with dual 14-bit Spectra 355L ISP, while Snapdragon 695 comes with triple 12-bit Spectra 346T ISP. Spectra 355L supports camera sensors up to 192MP resolution while Spectra 346T supports camera sensors up to 108MP resolution. Spectra 355L can record 30FPS videos at 4K resolution, while Spectra 346T can record 60FPS videos at 1080P resolution. Recently some people have been asking why Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G is not able to record 4K video. This is because the Spectra 346T ISP does not support 4K video recording. If we continue our comparison, Spectra 355L can record 32MP+16MP 30FPS videos with dual cameras, and 48MP resolution 30FPS videos with a single camera. Spectra 346T, on the other hand, can record 13MP+13MP+13MP 30FPS videos with 3 cameras, 25MP+13MP 30FPS with dual cameras and 32MP resolution 30FPS videos with a single camera. When we evaluate ISPs in general, we see that Spectra 355L is much better than Spectra 346T. When comparing ISPs, the winner this time is the Snadragon 690.
Modem
As for modems, Snapdragon 690 and Snapdragon 695 have Snapdragon X51 5G modem. But even if both chipsets have the same modems, Snapdragon 695 can achieve higher download and upload speeds as it has mmWave support, which is not available in Snapdragon 690. Snapdragon 690 can reach 2.5 Gbps Download and 900 Mbps Upload speeds. Snapdragon 695, on the other hand, can reach 2.5 Gbps Download and 1.5 Gbps Upload speeds. As we said above, Snapdragon 695’s Snapdragon X51 modem has mmWave support, allowing it to reach higher download and upload speeds. Our winner when it comes to modem is Snapdragon 695.
If we make a general evaluation, Snapdragon 695 shows a very good upgrade over Snapdragon 690 with new Cortex-A78 CPUs, Adreno 619 graphics processing unit and Snapdragon X51 5G modem with mmWave support. On the ISP side, although the Snapdragon 690 is slightly better than the Snapdragon 695, overall the Snapdragon 695 will outperform the Snapdragon 690. This year we will see the Snapdragon 695 chipset in many devices. Don’t forget to follow us if you want to see more such comparisons.
