Xiaomi 17, 17 Ultra to face hike in India

According to new numbers circulating online, India could welcome the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra with possible price hikes.

The devices are set to be unveiled globally soon. According to rumors, the phones will arrive in India in March.

Ahead of their arrival, tipster Abhishek Yadav revealed the alleged price tags of the models. According to the leaker, the vanilla model will start at ₹80,000, while the Ultra model could cost ₹1,25,000. To compare, the Xiaomi 15 arrived in India with a 12GB/512GB configuration for ₹64,999, while the Xiaomi 15 Ultra debuted with a 16GB/512GB configuration for ₹1,09,999.

The news corroborates an earlier report that the series will come with smaller batteries but higher price tags globally. According to the tip, the model’s 16GB/512GB configuration will cost €1499. To compare, the handheld’s Chinese version with the same configuration costs only CN¥7,499 ($1,078/€911). Even more, the global version of the phone only offers a 6000mAh cell, while the cheaper Chinese variant has a bigger 6800mAh battery.

It is not surprising, since Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing earlier explained that the reason was the growing trend of AI, with memory manufacturers now focusing on producing for data centers instead of creating more for smartphones.

“I expect pressure to be much heavier next year than this year,” the executive noted. “Overall, consumers are likely to see a sizeable rise in product retail prices. Some of the pressure may have to be addressed through price hikes, but price increases alone won’t be enough to digest it.”
