Xiaomi 17 Ultra going global with satellite comm, 4 rear cams; Pro series to remain China exclusive

While we won’t be seeing the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max globally, a new leak reveals that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is now being prepared. The model also reportedly now supports satellite connectivity and has a rear quad-camera system.

The Xiaomi 17 series debuted in China days ago, and a brand executive confirmed its high demand, especially the Pro Max model, which is now out of stock. In India, an official also confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 model will be announced soon. Since only the vanilla model was showcased in India, speculations suggest that it is the only one of the current lineup models that would debut globally. The claim was corroborated by earlier reports about the absence of dedicated global variants of the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max on certification platforms.

On a positive note, the Chinese company is now working on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which could debut alongside the standard model globally. New details about the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-armed phone also surfaced, some of which include its camera details.

According to a new leak, the phone will arrive with a rear quad-camera system. While the front of the phone will now be bumped to 50MP OV50M (vs. Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s 32MP selfie camera), the back is reportedly composed of a 50MP main camera (probably the 1″ OmniVision OV50X), a 50MP JN5 ultrawide, a 50MP JN5 telephoto, and a 200MP HPE periscope telephoto.

Interestingly, the Ultra model will now support a satellite connectivity feature. To recall, the said capability has been exclusive to Xiaomi’s Chinese smartphone variants since the start of its popularity. However, the discovery of a specific global variant of the phone suggests that Xiaomi might actually bring it to the international stage soon. If true, this could rival Apple and Samsung, both of which offer satellite communication in certain models. However, it remains unknown which global markets will support this for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, since such a feature might depend on Xiaomi’s partnership with carriers and providers.
