Xiaomi invests in Xiaomi Surge: A new semiconductor company founding

Xiaomi launched Surge S1 chip in 2017 and it was used in Xiaomi Mi 5c. Pinecone and Xiaomi collaborated during the process of Surge S1. In time Surge C1 (Image Signal Processor) and Surge P1 (Charging chip) followed the Surge S1.

Surge P1 is the chip actively being used on Xiaomi 12 Pro and POCO F4 GT.

Xiaomi invested in the establishment of Zhuhai Xinshijie Semiconductor Technology which has capital of 200 million CNY (approx. 30 million USD right now). The semiconductor company was established on June 23, 2022 and the company will do circuit manufacturing, chip design, device specific semiconductor equipment manufacturing on behalf of Xiaomi.

Zhuhai Hengqin Jianyun Investment holds 34% of the company’s shares and Guangdong-Macao Semiconductor Industry Investment Fund holds 22%. Xiaomi‘s affiliated company Hubei Xiaomi Changjiang Industry Fund Partnership (L.P.) holds 15% of the company shares.

Surge S1 wasn’t a processor that couldn’t even come close to Qualcomm flagship CPUs (Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 – Qualcomm Snapdragon 835) back then. So it’s still uncertain if the company will make a SoC. They could keep manufacturing charging chips or ISPs for Xiaomi.

Hubei Xiaomi Changjiang Industry Fund Partnership (L.P.) has invested in similar enterprises in the computer chips field such as micro control units (MCUs), AI chips and analog IC, covering many sectors in the mobile phone intelligent hardware supply chain, core devices of electronic products. The company has invested in 97 enterprises, including Zhuhai CosMX Battery.

It’s manufactured by TSMC with 28 nm process. Xiaomi announced the benchmark results back in the day and it can keep up with Snapdragon 625 which is a midranger CPU. Surge S1 has eight Cortex A53 cores, four of them clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four at a more battery friendly 1.4GHz.
