Xiaomi violates GPL licenses! [Updated: 6 May 2023]

Xiaomi is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer. It was known at the time for violating the GPL licenses. In the past, the kernel resources of the Mi A1 model were published quite late. And now, the kernel sources of many smartphones, especially the Xiaomi 12T series, have not yet been released.

It is unknown why the brand delayed. However, this is not a good sign. According to GPL licenses, smartphone manufacturers must release their kernel sources in a timely manner. With a post on Reddit, some things emerge.

Kernel Source of 2 Smartphones released! [6 May 2023]

Today Xiaomi has released the kernel source of 2 smartphones. Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimensity Edition and Redmi K60 users can now be happier. But still, the kernel sources of some models have not been published. This is against the GPL licenses. Smartphone manufacturers must abide by the GPL licenses. Therefore kernel sources should be released in a timely manner.

The kernel source of the Xiaomi 12T series has not yet been released. Especially Xiaomi 12T Pro users want the kernel sources to be released. Here are the models whose kernel sources have not yet been released!

Kernel Sources Unreleased Models:

  • Redmi Note 11 / NFC (spes/spesn)

  • Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G / Redmi Note 11E Pro (veux)

  • Xiaomi 12T (plato)

  • Xiaomi 12T Pro / Redmi K50 Ultra (diting)

  • Redmi Note 12 4G (tapas/topaz)

  • Redmi Note 12 5G (sunstone)

  • Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G (sweet_k6a)

  • Redmi Note 12S (sea)

  • Redmi K60E (rembrandt)

Does Xiaomi care about GPL licenses? [24 April 2023]

It seems that Chinese manufacturers do not act very well with GPL licenses. Brands like Samsung release kernel sources on time, but some brands like Xiaomi release them a little late. In some cases, it does not appear to be released. The kernel sources of the Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro have not yet been released.

This series was launched in October 2022. It’s been 5-6 months since it was introduced. No one develops custom ROMs for devices because the kernel sources are not released. This is a very bad and terrible situation. Smartphone manufacturers are required to abide by the GPL. So why does Xiaomi not comply with this? Maybe it’s to sell more devices.

Kernel Sources Unreleased Models:

  • Redmi Note 11 / NFC (spes/spesn)

  • Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G / Redmi Note 11E Pro (veux)

  • Xiaomi 12T (plato)

  • Xiaomi 12T Pro / Redmi K50 Ultra (diting)

  • Redmi Note 12 4G (tapas/topaz)

  • Redmi Note 12 5G (sunstone)

  • Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G (sweet_k6a)

  • Redmi Note 12S (sea)

  • Redmi K60 / POCO F5 Pro (mondrian) -kernel source released

  • Redmi K60E (rembrandt)

  • Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimensity Edition (daumier) -kernel source released

Among these devices, the kernel resources of the Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimensity Edition were previously uploaded on Mi Code. But for unclear reasons, it was later deleted and never restored. Xiaomi doesn’t seem to care much about MiCode. This move is against the GPL licenses.

Xiaomi needs to release its kernel sources. Xiaomi 12T Pro users want to use Custom ROMs. But since the kernel sources are not released, this is unlikely. We request the smartphone manufacturer release the kernel sources in a timely manner. Users are unhappy and sad.
