A Xiaomi executive revealed the reason behind the termination of the Xiaomi 17 Air model. Meanwhile, a tipster shared key details about the phone.
Several smartphone brands have jumped onto the Air design bandwagon in the past few months, following the release of the iPhone 17 Air. Xiaomi was also earlier reported to be developing its own Air version, but it was ultimately axed.
Now, Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing has confirmed that there was indeed a Xiaomi Air phone, but it was scrapped before entering mass production. According to the official, the phone’s form factor, especially its thin body and battery, led to significant compromises that can affect the user experience. To this end, despite passing the planning and preliminary research, the company decided to cancel it and opt for the upcoming Xiaomi 17 Max instead.
As per earlier leaks, the Xiaomi 17 Air would have had a 6.59″ display, a thickness of 5.5mm, and a 5000mAh battery. Reputable leaker Digital Chat Station affirmed some of these details, adding there was also supposed to be a 1.5K display resolution, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, and a dual rear camera with a 200MP sensor.
