Honor to release its first flip phone this year, CEO confirms

Honor is set to venture into the flip phone market by introducing its first entry in 2024. Nonetheless, the form factor of the smartphone is not the only thing special about it. Aside from its design, the creation might also be armed with some AI features.

Honor CEO George Zhao confirmed the move to CNBC in a recent report, signaling the company’s determination to challenge giants like Samsung, which is already dominating the industry. According to the executive, the development of the model is “internally in the final stage” now, ensuring fans that its 2024 debut is finally certain.

It is important to note that this is not the first time that the company is offering a folding phone. Honor already has a variety of folding phones in the market, like the Honor Magic V2. However, unlike its earlier creations that open and fold like books, the new phone expected to be released this year will be in a vertical-folding style. This should allow Honor to compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy Z series and Motorola Razr flip smartphones. Apparently, the upcoming model will be in the premium section, a lucrative market that could benefit the company in case this one becomes another success.

Aside from the phone’s form factor, no other details of the model were revealed. Yet, Zhao shared that the company is now exploring the field of AI, sharing that the goal is to bring it to its smartphones in the future. It is not a certainty that the new Honor phone will be equipped with AI, but it is important to note that the company shared a Llama 2 AI-based chatbot demo earlier. At MWC 2024, the company also boasted the AI eye-tracking feature of the Magic 6 Pro handset. With all this, while there are still no official announcements on when the Honor will offer these AI features to the public, there is no doubt that there is a chance we might experience them this year in its smartphone offerings.
