A new Counterpoint Research report has revealed some interesting details about the growing foldable market in China last year.
China is considered not only the biggest smartphone market in the world but also the perfect place for manufacturers to offer their foldables. According to Counterpoint, there was a 27% YoY growth in China’s foldable smartphone sales last year. Huawei reportedly dominated the market, thanks to its successful foldable models.
The firm shared that Huawei’s Mate X5 and Pocket 2 were the first two best-selling foldables in China last year. The report also states that Huawei is the top-performing brand in the foldable industry in the country by conquering half of the foldable sales. The report does not include specific figures but notes that the Huawei Mate X5 and Mate X6 were the top book-style models from the brand in 2024, while the Pocket 2 and Nova Flip were its top clamshell-type foldables.
The report also revealed the top five models that made up over 50% of foldable sales in China in 2024. After the Huawei Mate X5 and Pocket 2, Counterpoint says that the Vivo X Fold 3 ranked third, while the Honor Magic VS 2 and Honor V Flip secured third and fourth places, respectively. According to the firm, Honor “was the only other major player with a double-digit market share, driven by strong sales of the Magic Vs 2 and Vs 3 series.”
Ultimately, the firm corroborated earlier reports that book-style smartphones are more popular than their clamshell siblings. Last year in China, book-style foldables reportedly made up 67.4% of foldable sales, while clamshell-type phones only had 32.6%.
“This aligns with Counterpoint’s China Consumer Study, which shows that the country’s consumers tend to prefer book-type foldables,” the report reads.”…These devices are no longer predominantly used by men or business professionals but are also expanding to female consumers.”
