Does Xiaomi Spy On Its Users?
Some experts are certain that Xiaomi completes its devices with spying software. Is it true or not, it is difficult to say. The supporters of this point of view usually appeal to the fact that graphic interface MIUI uses suspicious apps. From time to time, such apps send data to servers located in China.
One of these apps is MIUI Daemon. After analyzing the app, it is clear that it can collect and send the information such as:
- Screen turn-on time
- Built in storage memory amount
- Loading main memory statistics
- Battery and CPU statistics
- Status of Bluetooth & Wi-Fi
- IMEI Number
Does MIUI Daemon carry spying apps?
We don’t think so. It is just a service to collect statistics. Yes, it sends information to developer’ servers. On the other hand it does not use private data. It appears to be that using this app Xiaomi company analyzes its users activity to release new firmware according to the users needs. Sometimes the app “eats” a lot of device recourses like batteries. This is not nice.
Is it safe to remove MIUI Daemon?
It’s possible to remove the APK, but there’s still the /system/xbin/mqsasd which cannot be removed safely (you won’t be able to boot). The mqsas service is integrated in framework.jar and boot.img as well. So it is better to force stop or revoke its authorization. Verdict
It is safe to assume that MIUI Daemon app does not collect private data, but mostly gathers certain stats in order to improve the user quality, therefore it is safe.
